These ‘MAMMA MIA’ Fans Say “Thank You For the Music”
San Francisco residents Bill Huston, Patrick Jacobs and Debra Fox are self-proclaimed MAMMA MIA Super Fans. After seeing the show for the first time back in 2000, they’ve loyally purchased tickets every time the show’s played San Francisco. They now know every lyric, every song, and every dance number. They can probably even serve as an understudy if a cast member is ill.
With MAMMA MIA now playing in the SHN Orpheum Theatre (where it made it’s US premiere in November 2000), we caught up with our very own Super Troupers to find out why they’re all “Gimme Gimme Gimme” about MAMMA MIA!
A little about our Super Fans – Bill Huston currently resides in the East Bay with his wife, three children, two dogs, two cats, and a partridge in a pear tree (his joke). Debra Fox (pictured above) moved to the SF Bay Area 33 years ago. She has three children, all of whom she’s introduced to live theatre at a very young age. Patrick Jacobs (pictured above) owns his own advertising agency and is a native San Franciscan from the Sunset District. Now onto the questions.
How many times have you seen MAMMA MIA?
Debra – Eight times. I’m going on April 5th for the ninth time.
Bill – This upcoming show will be my fifth time seeing it.
Patrick – I have seen the show seven times and can see it seven more!
Tell us why you love MAMMA MIA!
Bill – I appreciate smart stage productions and musicals. This show’s storyline and music simply speaks to me.
Patrick – First of all, I think the question should be, how can you NOT love MAMMA MIA? The show keeps you fully entertained from the first minute until the very last second.
Debra – Some musicals I only see once, some musicals twice, but rarely is there a musical that I will see multiple times. MAMMA MIA is one of those plays!
What is your favorite song?
Patrick – “Knowing Me. Knowing You.” It is a magical moment in the show.
Debra – I’ve have to say, “Chiquitita.” I love the friendship, caring and love between Donna, Tanya, and Rosie. But having said that – ALL the songs are awesome.
Bill – How can I not give props to the amazing songs, “Dancing Queen” and “Mamma Mia“? However, my favorite song in the show is “S.O.S.” I relate to the characters in that moment and sympathize with their passion and fear of loving each other.
Who is your favorite character?
Debra – “Donna,” because of the amazing, strong, talented woman she is, and because she raised an equally strong daughter all on her own.
Bill – “Sam.” I identify with his character in may ways, even to reference the statement regarding his wife; “She doesn’t scare me…much.” That is when you know you love someone.
Patrick – For sure, Tanya! I seem to always date women who are exactly like her so I can relate. I also love the line when she says her father hired a good lawyer on her wedding day.
What three words would you use to describe MAMMA MIA?
Patrick – Exhilarating. Clever. Romantic.
Bill – Pure Pleasure Fest.
Debra – Exhilarating. Fun. Totally toe-tapping music!
For those that have NEVER seen the show, why should they take a chance on MAMMA MIA?
Bill – The music and storyline will blow your mind. The feel of the ’70s rock music mixed with the feel of current events will not disappoint.
Debra – You will have so much fun and the great songs will be going through your head forever. Even if you think you’re not an ABBA fan, you likely will be when the show is over. I honestly can’t get enough of this fantastic musical.
Patrick – MAMMA MIA is the most clever storyline I have ever encountered in my 20 years as an avid theatergoer. I can also guarantee there will be a song or two in this musical that will make you reflect on your own life. Finally, you just feel really amazing after the show is over; great energy.
