Member Spotlight: Kristi Yamaguchi
GOLDEN TICKET: Kristi Yamaguchi, Olympic figure skater and SHN Member of two years, revels in the magic of theater.
What is your occupation?
Professional figure skater, Olympian, founder/chair of Always Dream Foundation.
What are your top five favorite Broadway shows?
1. Les Misérables
3. Disney’s THE LION KING
4. West Side Story
5. The Phantom of the Opera
What was the first Broadway show you saw?
It was Cats, in NYC, when I was 14. It was my first trip to NYC and I was in awe of how busy and crowded it was. I loved the musical especially seeing the staging and dancing and singing playing out in so grand a fashion. It was magical and I have been a Broadway fan ever since.
Which character in a musical or play do you most identify with?
I’m a hopeless romantic so I’ll go with Eponine from Les Mis. She has a quiet strength and determination about her. When it’s her moment (“On My Own”), she is epic.
What is one thing that someone would be surprised to know about you?
I’m an enthusiastic sports fan that sometimes has fits of screaming and yelling, especially during Sharks playoff games.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Being a mom.
If you could have dinner with one person (living or dead), who would it be and why?
Princess Di. I had always admired her especially her work in philanthropy. Her enormous heart and gracious ways were inspiring.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an Olympian and/or a nurse.
Is there anything else that we should know about you?
My passion outside of my family is my Always Dream Foundation. Our mission is to inspire under-served children to reach for their dreams through innovative reading programs. We bring these programs into kindergarten classrooms and provide access to books in hopes of fostering a love of reading.
