BILLY LITTLEFIELD’S FETCH TRIP TO NYC
SHN Member Billy Littlefield won an all-expense paid trip to New York City to see MEAN GIRLS on Broadway. He took the time to write about his experience and share some photos.
SHN members really do win!
We had so much fun going to see MEAN GIRLS on Broadway! The trip was a whirlwind packed with sight-seeing, reconnecting with old friends, eating lots of pizza, and of course the crown jewel of the trip was the show itself. Maybe it was just me, or maybe it was the combination of it being both October 3rd and a Wednesday, but you could feel the pre-show energy pulsating from the August Wilson as the evening was got underway. We could see an ocean of pink on the street from our hotel room as people were getting ready to go in. Everyone else in the crowd had also won their tickets to this special Mean Girl’s Day performance, so the theatre was buzzing (although we felt extra special getting flown in from SF by SHN). The complimentary rosé and Tina Fey pre-show appearance were icing on the cake.
The show itself was such a blast — I knew I’d enjoy it, but this ranks as one of my all-time favorites! I absolutely love when the Plastics appear for the first time in the cafeteria as an explosion of pink wraps the stage behind them. Regina’s slow-motion walking in place during “Apex Predator” absolutely slayed. I thought the “digital set” was awesome and innovative (and made for killer scene transitions). The individual performances were incredibly strong across the board (seriously… everyone on that stage blew me away). Shoutout to fellow CMU alums Grey Henson & Kyle Selig. The fun and flirty tone from the movie was perfectly translated onto the stage while also keeping those good morals about the dangers of being catty (pun intended). I’ve been singing the cast recording at home non-stop for the last 2 weeks.
This was actually also my first time ever seeing a show on Broadway, and it couldn’t have been a better experience. I got a late start in life getting into the wonderful world of musical theater, but I’ve fallen in love with everything about it — the enthusiastic community, outstanding vocal performances, out-of-nowhere dance numbers — I love it all, and can’t wait to continue notching shows into my belt as an SHN member. Matt and I are so thankful for this memorable trip; you guys really gave us star treatment and it was so fetch.
