SHN OPENS ITS DOORS TO THE MID-MARKET NEIGHBORHOOD
PIPPIN is Broadway’s high-flying, death-defying hit musical about a young man’s search for his purpose in life. The inspiring musical is one that should not be missed, which is why SHN opened the doors to the SHN Golden Gate Theatre and extended an invite for some of our neighbors to come see the show and experience a day at the theatre.
SHN partnered with The Golden State Division of The Salvation Army and invited middle school- and high school-age kids from the Tenderloin and SOMA districts to the SHN Golden Gate Theatre in Mid-Market to experience the 2013 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival PIPPIN where the teens participated in exclusive pre- and post-show activities. This special event took place on Saturday, Oct. 4.
After helping kick off the new school year by donating 3,500 “Matilda” books as part of Mayor Ed Lee’s 9th Annual Mission and Tenderloin Backpack Giveaways in partnership with The Salvation Army and Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) respectively, SHN continued its mission to give back to the city of San Francisco by opening its doors to the SHN Golden Gate Theatre and provided teenagers from the Mid-Market area the chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime day at the theatre in conjunction with PIPPIN.
At 12:30pm, acrobats featured in PIPPIN met the teens in the Mezzanine Lobby of the SHN Golden Gate Theatre for a pre-show workshop and lecture. The kids not only heard from those involved with the production about what it takes to perform in a show, but the dedication needed to pursue your dreams. They also learned circus tricks directly from the cast. At 1:00pm, the participants were invited inside the theatre where they watched rehearsal, something that is normally closed to the public. At 2:00pm, the students saw a live performance of the Tony Award-winning PIPPIN for free.
“Inviting teenagers, many of whom have never seen a Broadway show before, to the SHN Golden Gate to experience the Tony Award-winning PIPPIN is an exciting opportunity for SHN to give back to our community and inspire the youth of San Francisco,” said SHN Chief Executive Officer Greg Holland. “PIPPIN tells the story of a young man in search of an extraordinary life. We hope by experiencing the world of live theater, along with the whole experience of the day, we help inspire those participating to dream big and, like Pippin, strive for an extraordinary life.”
