BEAUTIFUL, In Conversation
In the summer of 1960, a teenage girl from Brooklyn walked into a Manhattan recording studio and started writing the songs that would shape a generation. Her name was Carole King. Her story is Beautiful.
In September 2013, SHN presented the world premiere of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, in San Francisco, and the exhilarating production went on to become a Tony Award®–winning hit on Broadway. This August, the musical will experience its first homecoming when it returns to San Francisco for a six-week engagement.
On Monday, June 27, the cast and creative team of BEAUTIFUL – THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL gathered at the SHN Orpheum Theatre to talk about the hit musical’s journey— from San Francisco, to Broadway, then back again. Hosted by Ben Fong Torres—author and the “almost famous” former senior editor and writer at Rolling Stone—this special event featured Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil (words and music), Paul Blake and Mike Bosner (Producers), and Marc Bruni (Director), who shared their stories about their work on this show and, specifically, the significance and influence that the city of San Francisco and Bay Area theater-goers had on its creation.
Audiences were also treated to a special performance by Becky Gulsvig and Ben Fankhauser—the current cast who portrays Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, who will be returning to San Francisco—singing “The Boy I Love” and “Walking in the Rain.”
But, that’s not all! Before the event concluded, Mann surprised the audience by singing “On Broadway,” a song he co-wrote with his wife, Weil, in collaboration with the team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
