Getting to Know Beautiful’s Carole King: Abby Mueller
Before Beautiful – The Carole King Musical made it to Broadway in 2013, the show spent a month here in San Francisco for its pre-Broadway tryout and world premiere. At that time, the title role was played by Jessie Mueller, who won a Tony Award® for her portrayal of the singer-songwriter.
“When we were in San Francisco, Jessie Mueller was playing the show … and her sister, Abby, was [next door] doing a production of 1776. Little did she know at that point that a couple years later, Abby would be coming back to San Francisco to headline Beautiful,” said director Marc Bruni. “So, you get to see Jessie’s sister, the wonderful actress Abby Mueller, creating a version of Carole that captures the essence of Carole, but in her own way, and with a sense of heart, craft, and an attention to detail that is just spectacular. She is absolutely wonderful.”
SHN had the opportunity to chat with Abby to find out more about the actress playing Carole King in the first national tour of Beautiful. Check out what she had to say, below.
Before you were performing, what was the oddest job you’ve had?
I’ve nannied since I was a teenager. I’ve also worked as a camp counselor, a spa receptionist, and various temp jobs.
Tell us about the craziest/best/most memorable fan encounter.
The most memorable encounter of this tour would have to be when WE were the fans! Carole King herself showed up to our first performance in Boston, and we all were so excited and honored.
What would you, today, tell your younger self when you first started in show business?
People say it all the time because it actually is true: all you have to worry about is being yourself. That is all you ever have to be. And the good news is, you are already enough just as you are.
Don’t miss your chance to see Abby Mueller as Carole King in Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, now playing through September 18 at the SHN Orpheum Theatre. Get your tickets today at shnsf.com.
