HAMILTON & Newsela’s Bay Area Reading Challenge
Newsela—an educational organization that easily facilitates and encourages reading for teachers and students—held a reading challenge for Bay Area schools in Santa Clara County, San Mateo County, San Francisco County, and Alameda County. This three-week reading challenge was part of their “A Mile In Our Shoes” program, which promotes empathy and inclusiveness through reading. After reading articles about empathy, students took quizzes to gain points for their schools—the school(s) with the highest score at the end of the challenge won a school visit from cast members from the national tour of the musical HAMILTON.
In first place, Kipp Heritage Academy in San Jose sat down with Isaiah Johnson (George Washington), who talked about his awkward years in middle school and encouraged the students to keep working hard and to stay true to themselves.
Next, Isaiah visited Rancho Milpitas Middle School in Milpitas where one of their teachers and talented students gave him—and the crowd of 600+ students—a fun performance of Lafayette’s rap in “Gun and Ships.”
In third place, Hillcrest Elementary School in Oakland won a meet-and-greet with cast members Karli Dinardo, Jeffrey Duffy, Hope Endrenyi, and Jacob Guzman.
